Skapanadeskola, or "Creative School" is a national initiative that provides grants to primary schools for them to arrange artistic and cultural projects. The goal is to intergrate additional art and culture into the teaching in the long term and strengthen cooperation between the school and professional cultural actors. I was recently asked to hold a workshop with a group of first graders!
As I've mentioned a few times before; what I really love about holding workshops is to see my students' imagination blossom and follow their steps of development. In addition to this, what I can't help but absolutely adore when teaching art to kids, is that they have no limits. They're not yet blocked by the expectations of society that they've picked up from experience. Instead they let their imaginations flow freely without questioning it.
I did two visits in this school, with about 25 pupils in each class. We started the day with looking at my personal work and discussing the meaning of imagination, and the odd combinations I create in my paintings. When we felt ready to start creating we did a little warm-up drawing each, where the kids had to "finish the drawing" from a few lines that were on the paper. The results from this filled me with pure happiness, party because of the widely different results that camm from the same few lines, and party because of their sense of color. This was a very appreciated exercise!
Now we got to the big painting task; to paint your dream animal or creature! And here the results varied even more. Together we created a new fantasy world with all types of creatures, landscapes and even scenarios.
We went through all the results together and whoever wanted got to explain their thoughts behind their artwork. With this we created an entire story together just through the simplicity of imagination!
I had a great time teaching at the school and the kids are the sweetest. My heart melted a little bit when they asked me if I could come back every week..! I would've loved to!
